Here are several ways to find low airfares in the United States.
1. Fly to airports nearby the city you're flying into.
Many major cities have more than one airport, generally you can find some
lower fares to these airports, they are also smaller and have fewer passengers
than the big hubs have, the downside is that there are fewer connections through
these airports. In Chicago, there is O'Hare Airport and Midway airport, In Denver
you can fly into DIA (Denver International Airport) or Colorado Springs (If you have
time to drive), In Los Angeles you can fly into LAX (Los Angeles Internaional), Ontario,
Burbank, or Santa Ana. In San Francisco there is SFO, Oakland, and San Jose. And in
Wahshington DC, there is Dulles Airport, National Airport, and BWI (Baltimore-Washington)
Most airports listed above with the exception of Colorado Springs are somewhat nearby the
city.
2. Low Fare Airlines.
There are many start-up airlines that offer low fares, there are many on both coasts,
and in the middle section of the contry, also the major airlines are starting new low-
cost airlines, the first was United Shuttle which offers service to many West-coast cities
from its two hubs in San Francisco and Los Angeles on two-class 737's. The newest is
Delta Express which opperates service to Orlando from over a dozen east-coast cities,
its serviced by all-coach 737's. Do not get Southwest airlines confused with start-up
airlines, Southwest has been in exsistance since 1971, and spends $25 million per plane,
not $1 or $ 2 million like some start up airlines. Southwest has started service to as
east as Rhode Island, Southwest flights connect through other cities, and fly into cities
nearby major cities as described above. There are many other airlines, too many to mention
they serve both coasts, and most if not all are good. The major concerns with start-up
airlines are their saftey and whether or not they will be in opperation when you fly, most
(if not all) start-up airlines are reputable and safe to fly on, and if you are worried
about if they are going out of buissness use your credit card, if they do you can get your
money back.
3. Connecting flights
On longer flights even where there are non-stops, lower fares can be found through
connecting flights, because on more popular routes there is higher demand, so the flights
fill up faster, so deals can be found on flights that aren't filling up, those flights
may be connections or non-stops.
4. Flexibility/ Best days to fly
If you can be flexible on when you go, if you can go on a later or an earlier flight, or
on another day, you can find a lower fare by the day you travel, generally mid-week
departures (and, or) returning can yield a lower fare, the most important thing is
a Saturday night stay. Also very early or very late flights may have low fares.
5. Computers/ Travel Agents
Get a program which allows for booking and to check the fares many such programs are
availible for free, make an itinerary and save it, then check it every day, fares change
almost as frequent as stocks. These programs can be found on Compuserve, the Internet, and
for download from websites. The great fares may be only availible for a very short time
(1 or 2 days). Also a good travel agent could also do this, and it looks like there
service is free, but it isn't, when an agent books your trip they get a commision from the
airline, this is one of the highest costs for airlines.
6. When you book
For a low fare don't book it the day before, or 330 days before, about 2-3 mounths is
best, but that time could change depending on the route, I think you should start looking
at about 4 or 5 mounths before travel if that is possible and check it daily.
7. Internet deals
Some airlines have special deals available on their Internet sites, these fares can be
up to 70% off the published fare, but there are a few restrictions as to availiblity.
8. Charter Airlines
Many charter airlines can get you a low fare. These charter airlines are serviced by their
own planes, or some from other airlines. They have the right to cancel the flight up until
the week before the flight, use caution when dealing with charter airlines.
